If your hire car breaks down or develops a technical fault, move it to a safe location, switch on your hazard lights, and call SIXT Roadside Assistance. Do not continue driving if the hazard lights are on or if the vehicle won't start — this could cause further damage.

First steps

  • Pull over somewhere safe and switch on your hazard lights (on motorways, exit the vehicle on the left-hand side).

  • If provided for your rental (depending on differing country road laws), put on your high-visibility vest and place a warning triangle if it is safe to do so.

  • Do not attempt any repairs yourself.

When you call

  • Give your exact location, registration plate, and rental agreement number.

  • Describe any warning lights and the nature of the fault.
