Moving Service. Truck Tolls in the UK – HGV Levy

Toll charging is an important issue for truck drivers with large commercial vehicles. We would like to take this opportunity and inform you on your obligation to pay tolls in the UK.

Which vehicles have to pay toll charges?

For the use of motorways in in the UK, you will have to obtain a “Levy” for vehicles of 12t and over. Levy amounts vary according to the vehicle’s weight, axle configuration and levy duration.

Cost and payment

UK registered vehicles

Since April 2014, UK registered vehicles will pay levy costs at the same time and in the same transaction as vehicle excise duty. Payments will be collected by the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

You can buy the road levy online, by telephone or at a limited number of point of sale terminals on ferries and truck stops. The service also offers a ‘registered account’ and a ‘pay and go’ purchasing option.

Non-UK registered vehicles

Vehicles registered abroad must make levy payments before entering the UK.
The levy can be paid by day, week, month or year and discounts are available for longer levy periods.

The foreign operator payment system is operated by Northgate Public Services on behalf of the Department for Transport. Non-UK registered trucks can sign up for updates about how and where to pay levy.
