Most common FAQs
What is the miminum age to drive a rental vehicle?
It varies from country to country with some being as low as 19 years old. However in the UK and in most other countries the minimum age is 21 years old. Be sure to verify beforehand. At 21 years old you will need to have held a valid licence for at least one year and that will let you drive economy, mini and compact cars. As you get to ages 23, 25 and 30 and have held a licence for enough years larger cars such as SUVs and luxury cars become available. For a full list of vehicle groups please refer to our full guide. Please also note that there is an Underage Driver Fee for anyone younger than 25 years of age.
What proof of identification (ID) / documentation do I need to bring with me when collecting the vehicle?
Anyone who wishes to rent a car must be the appropriate age and carry a valid driver’s licence for at least one year. If you are using a valid paper licence you must also provide additional information so penalty points can be referenced. These are already on the modern plastic licences.
Any driving licences with non-Roman Alphabet, such as Russian or Chinese, must be accompanied by a valid International Driving Permit.
You must have a valid form of payment in the name of the driver. In addition to the above, UK residents are required to bring two proofs of address from the last three months and non-UK residents will need to provide either a valid passport or national ID card.
Can I add an additional driver?
While it does add a small cost we can always add additional drivers, which makes longer journeys often more convenient, safer and less stressful. We of course ask that any additional driver holds a valid driving licence and have done for at least a year (depending on age and vehicle). We also ask that the driver(s) be present during vehicle pick-up so we can check the licence. If this is not possible on the day you can pop into any branch with the additional driver and validate them beforehand.
