Insurance & Protection Policies for your Car Hire

For your protection and peace of mind, Sixt includes a variety of protection policies for your car rental so you can select the ideal package for your comfort and experience. See below a list of our most frequently asked questions regarding insurance, but we also offer resources regarding commercial claims and roadside protection. If we were unable to answer your question, feel free to contact our friendly customer service team here who will be happy to help.

Is protection included in my rental booking?

When you rent a vehicle from Sixt, Third Party Liability cover for bodily injury and property damage will always be provided, in accordance with the legal requirements. Sixt also includes loss damage waiver (LDW) in all of its UK rates.

Can I reduce OR remove my excess amount?

SIXT offers many optional products that will provide benefits for different types of situations you might encounter. Details about the variety of protection options can be found here, and in the rental agreement terms and conditions that are provided when you rent.

What is a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)?

Loss Damage Waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage or theft. LDW is mandatory in Great Britain unless the customer is from the US or Canada and has insurance cover through their own credit card.

Under the Damage Protection Programme you are only responsible for the damage and our reasonable administration fees, which arise when we deal with these matters. However, you still have to pay an amount up to the damage excess amount every time you damage the vehicle or any replacement vehicle and if any replacement vehicle is lost or stolen. If the accident is third party's fault, we will try and recover the cost of the repair to our vehicle from the other party. If we are successful, we will be able to refund all or part of your damage deposit at that time.

Does the protection cover Glass and Windscreen?

Glass and Windscreen is not covered by the inclusive Loss Damage waiver, we offer separate cover for Glass and Windscreen, however should Super Top Cover LDW be selected this would cover all damages to a £0 excess.

What is Roadside Protection?

The roadside protection is an extended breakdown protection during the rental and protects you at home against high service and repair costs for the following incidents caused by you: key locked in vehicle, breaking caused by lack of fuel, assistance with starting necessitated by flat battery, loss of key and vehicle stuck.

What if I am under 25 years of age, do I have to pay extra insurance?

Drivers under the age of 25 are required to pay a Young Driver Surcharge, which currently stands at £36.00 (includes VAT) per day.

When will I be charged the cost of repair for damage to a vehicle?

Our Claims Department will contact you as soon as they can to advise you of the details.

Are second or additional drivers covered on the insurance?

To be protected, all additional drivers need to be added to the Rental Agreement (RA) to ensure they are not in violation of the rental agreement terms and conditions. They must qualify with the age requirements to drive the vehicle type rented and will benefit from any optional products and benefits purchased at SIXT as long as there are no violations to the rental agreement. A charge per day for every additional driver would be applicable where allowed by law. The prices for additional drivers vary per state and length of rental, so check the booking to identify the charge for the location and dates you are requesting. There is no charge for additional drivers in California but they should be listed on the rental agreement to be authorised to drive.

What happens if the vehicle is damaged during my rental period?

If there is new damage that has occurred on the vehicle, this will be noted when the vehicle is returned and you will be charged the applicable cost of repair.

Can I use my own insurance for a hire car?

No, it is not permitted to use personal insurance for a hire car unless the hire is on a business account.
