Traffic Information

Traffic Information

Our Dubai Airport desk is located in the car rentals area of Terminal One while there is also a Sixt desk at Terminal 3. From there it takes just 15 minutes on the E11 road to reach the city centre. Our Sheikh Zayed Road office can be found in the Gargash Enterprises Showroom next to Time Square.

Dubai has excellent roads but ongoing construction works can lead to temporary closures and diversions. A Sat Nav helps you avoid these problems. The city roads become very congested during morning and evening peak hours. Several roads have toll charges, Salik tags on rental cars automatically register these and you will be charged when you return your vehicle.

There are plenty of parking options in Dubai either in metered street zones or clearly marked parking areas. Payment can be made by cash, SMS or by downloading a smartphone app.

Starting your visit to Dubai with a drive across the city highlights the contrast between the small Old Dubai district and the spectacular modern city that is spreading across the desert. Then spend a morning in the original part of the city. Here many buildings have been reconstructed in the traditional style giving you an evocative glimpse into the past. The Dubai Museum is located under the al-Fahidi Fort and documents just how quickly the transition from a pearl-diving village to today's modern city-state has been made. While in Old Dubai, take some time to browse the souks for your souvenirs. Head forwards in time and drive to Dubai Marina. Walk along the suspended Marina Walk, admiring the superyachts around you. The Marina also has beaches, shops and restaurants.

Lots of construction in Dubai is world-beating including the Palm Islands reclaimed from the waters of the Gulf but the most outstanding architectural achievement must be the Burj Khalifa. Take the lift to admire the views from the gallery on the 124th floor. Although this observation deck is the highest in the world you are actually only half way up the world's tallest structure. This impressive building also contains the Dubai Fountain, another world-beater. The fountain is 900' long with jets of water that shoot 500' into the air. It is turned on every evening and the fountain's water appears to dance in time to classical, world and Arabic music accompanied by light shows. 22,000 gallons of water are airborne at any one time.

A drive to Jebel Maleihah or "fossil rock" brings home the fact that this area has not always been a desert region. Here marine fossils can be seen embedded in rocky outcrops. The wonderful rock formations at nearby Fujairah give you the perfect photo opportunity.

Dubai is one of the world's fastest growing economies, an economy originally based on oil and natural gas. Today these sectors only make up a small percentage of the economy, overtaken by property, retail, tourism and financial services. The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre is housed in the Dubai World Trade Centre. As well as hosting conferences and trade shows it is also designed for live performances.
