The fourth largest of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has been recognised as a ‘biosphere reserve protected site’ by UNESCO with respect to the island’s incredible volcanic landscapes and unique beaches. Lanzarote is a scuba-diver’s heaven, as the combination of clear waters, white sand and abundant sea life make it one of the top areas in the world to dive. If you want to discover the many different beaches the island has to offer, then check out Papagayo Beach, which is in fact a series of small beaches wedged between lava rocks, perfect for swimming in the clear waters as well as long walks. Timanfaya National Park is another natural wonder that should not be missed, nicknamed the ‘Montanas del Fuego’ by locals, the landscape was formed by a volcanic eruption in the 18th century, while El Diablo restaurant provides fantastic panoramic views of the park. For a visually brilliant experience, one must check out Cueva de los Verdes, a lava tube that is four miles long. While if you visit Volcan El Cuervo, you can even get the opportunity to walk inside the crater and explore.

In summer, visit the viewpoints and public sculptures created by Cesar Manrique. Admire his public outdoor sculptures, such as Fobos in Tahiche and the nearby Energia de la Piramide. The most striking viewpoint in Lanzarote is the almost 500m high Mirador del Rio which is a stunning viewing platform. With your own hire car you’ll be able to explore the whole island at will.
