Best cities to visit in Central Italy
- Rome: Besides being home to some of the world’s iconic landmarks, there’s plenty more to explore. Spend the day exploring Centro Storico and the Spanish Steps, with churches filled with art, wondrous palaces and vibrant squares, or piazzas. Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome’s most beautiful churches, and since you’ll have a car, drive to Palatine Hill, the site of the city’s earliest settlement.
- Naples: Most well-known for the ruins of Pompeii and Renaissance churches, Naples harbour was the gateway to the Mediterranean, guarded by Lungomare and Castel Ovo. From these ancient buildings, you can look across to Mount Vesuvius. The Roman Catacombs of San Gennaro are more ornate than those in Rome, and the royal palace, Palazzo Reale, was used by successive Bourbon kings.
- Vasto: On the opposite coast of central Italy, Vasto has wonderful views over the Adriatic, best enjoyed from the Punta Della Penne harbour lighthouse. The old town centre features the Caldoresco Castle and the historic Piazza Rosetti, dating back to the 14th century. You can also visit Museo Civico Archaeologica and the Cattedrale di San Guiseppe.
