Sixt Car Hire Payment Methods

When hiring a car with Sixt, we offer you a selection of payment methods so you don't necessarily need a credit card to book your perfect rental car. Accordingly we would like to provide a clear explanation of the payment methods that Sixt currently accepts and the conditions surrounding each different method. Sixt accepts a wide range of payment methods to allow increased freedom and accessibility to our services.

1. Do I need a credit card to hire a car?

No, you can pay for your rental car with a Visa Debit card. The payment method must have been issued in the name of the driver and must be presented at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid at this time. The amount that will be debited includes the rental price as well as all additional charges and extras, if any.


2.What payment methods are accepted by Sixt rent a car?

  • All major credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, Eurocard, American Express and Diner's Club.
  • UK Debit cards: Visa Debit cards.


3.Which is NOT accepted as a form of payment?

  • Cash is not accepted at any Sixt branch
  • Visa Electron (debit card) is not accepted
  • Pre-paid cards e.g. pre-paid Mastercard


4.Can I pay using a non-UK Debit Card? 

No, Only UK Debit cards are accepted as a method of payment by Sixt.


5.Can I pay for my rental from Sixt in advance?

Yes, Sixt offer a Prepaid tariff as well as a flexible pay-on-arrival tariff. Please be advised that fees apply to cancelling and changing prepaid bookings.


6.What if I want to cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation either by logging onto My Sixt or contacting our reservations team on +44 (0) 8444 99 33 99. 


7.Can I pay for a reservation using a company credit card?

Yes, we offer Sixt Trade. For more information please visit this link about renting a car with a company credit card.


8.What car hire deposit do I have to pay?

  • For Debit Cards: The minimum deposit of £250.00 plus the cost of the rental and all additional charges is required. 
  • For Credit Cards: The minimum amount of authorisation will be determined by multiplying the rate of the rental reservation and other relevant charges, in conjunction with an additional security deposit.

The amount is not immediately debited but held on the cardholder's bank account until the final rental charge amount has been debited. When the vehicle is returned, the invoiced amount will be charged to the credit card provided, unless you present another form of payment.


9.What is the difference between an approval and a deposit?

An approval is an amount held on your credit card. Generally, the sum of double the total rental cost and shows as a pending transaction on your credit card.

Deposits are taken from Debit cards and is £250 along with the full rental cost and will be reimbursed following completion of the hire.


10.How long after my rental finishes will it take for my deposit/ approval to reach my account?

Please allow up to 10 working days for the funds to clear and become available in your account. 


11.Can I book a vehicle and pay for it even if I will not be the person who will be collecting and driving it?

No, the Credit Card holder who is paying for the booking has to be the main driver, as this will be stated on the Rental Agreement. Please refer to Sixt Prepaid Terms and Conditions.


12.What do I need to provide for renting a luxury or special vehicle?

For luxury and special vehicles, payment must be made using a major credit card only. Debit cards are not accepted.
