What documents do I need to provide?

When picking up your SIXT rental, all documents must be presented in original form. Copies or digital versions cannot be accepted. The required documents depend on your country of residence.

 

For UK residents:

 

  • Valid driving licence, valid for the entire rental period.
  • If your driving licence does not include a photo, an additional ID (National ID card or Passport) is required.
  • For luxury vehicles, a passport is required.
  • If you have been a UK resident for more than 1 year, a UK driving licence is mandatory.

For non-UK residents:

 

  • Valid driving licence.
  • Passport or national ID card, valid for at least three months after rental return.
  • Passports with visa exemptions are accepted only if the exemption is older than six months at the end of the rental.

  • Drivers must have held a valid licence for at least 1 year.
  • Additional requirements depend on the issuing country of the licence.

 

UK licences:

 

  • A current DVLA check code or printout is required for all named drivers. Codes and reports can be obtained at DVLA.
  • Drivers may not have more than 8 penalty points. Some offences under 8 points may also lead to rejection. Please check with our Call Centre: 08444 99 33 99.

EU licences:

 

  • Valid EU licences are accepted without additional requirements

 

Other licences:

  • Licences not in Latin script (Arabic, Cyrillic, Japanese, etc.) must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP) or official translation.
  • Official translations must be issued by a recognized authority or automobile association of the issuing country.
  • SIXT supports Chinese customers with translations via the WeChat account or following Link.
  • Indian licences require an electronic chip for international validity; otherwise, an IDP is required.
  • Non-EU drivers are responsible for ensuring they have a valid International Driving Permit for driving in the UK.

 

Accepted Payment Methods

  • All payment methods must be valid at the time of rental and expire at least one month after the rental return date.
  • The cardholder must be the renter.

Accepted cards and wallets:

 

  • Credit & debit cards: American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, Maestro, AirPlus.
  • Digital wallets (Apple Pay) at selected locations for prepaid bookings and digital checkouts.
  • PayPal at selected locations for prepaid bookings. The PayPal account must be in the renter’s name.
  • Debit cards must be issued in the renter’s country of residence.
  • Cash or prepaid cards are not accepted.
