Rules & Regulations

Here are some road rules and regulations that you should know before you start driving in Armenia.

  • Drive on the right hand side of the road.
  • The passing beam should be turned on at night and in the conditions of the poor visibility caused by bad weather.
  • Children under 12 years old are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat.
  • It is compulsory for front seat occupants to wear seat belts.
  • You are only allowed to use a mobile phone whilst driving with a hands free set.
  • You are not permitted to cross the continuous white line in the middle of the road.
  • Drink driving is strictly forbidden when driving in Armenia.

The standard legal limits, which may be varied by signs, for private vehicles without trailers are as follows:

  • in the built up areas – 60 km/h
  • outside the built up areas – 90 km/h
  • on motorways – 110 km/h
  • in the residential areas - 20 km/h

Things to Bring Along

It is compulsory to have the following equipment with you when driving in Armenia:

  • UK driver’s licence
  • International driver’s licence
  • Insurance documents
  • You are required to have a warning triangle, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher with you in the car.
  • A road map of Armenia will be a useful addition to have even if you have sat nav.

Winter tyres will be needed in winter and the use of snow chains could be needed if you are travelling in mountainous roads.

Be cautious when travelling through towns at night.

Drive with extra care as some roads are in poor condition.

The far right lane can be used for parking.

A 4x4 could be needed if you are planning on driving in more remote parts of the country.
