Wales: A Land of Castles and Beauty

Wales is reputed to have more castles per square mile than any other country in the world with three examples either in Cardiff itself or on its doorstep. We have already mentioned Cardiff Castle but try and fit in Castell Coch and St Fagans Castle as well. The first is just six miles North of the city while St Fagans is a short drive West. A fascinating Natural History Museum can be found here as well. Cardiff has a claim to fame in literary circles as the birthplace of Roald Dahl, the celebrated children's author. He was christened in the dockside Norwegian church. References to his life and works can be found across the city with regular exhibitions held in local museums.

At its peak, the city's Tiger Bay area was once the busiest port in the world. Today, heavy industry has largely been replaced by finance and business services with companies such as Legal & General, Admiral Insurance, The AA and British Telecom all having large regional or national headquarters in Cardiff. Tourism also makes up a large proportion of the city's economy with one in five workers involved in this sector at some level. The Wales Millennium Centre is a large multipurpose venue for conferences, trade shows and performances.
