Top things to do in Skopje - Visit The Old Bazaar neighbourhood of Skopje, known as Carsija, has been occupied for almost three thousand years, and has been an important center for trade for the past thousand years or so! Most of the people currently living in this neighourhood are ethnic Albanians, so there is a multicultural influence and the city's strongest Muslim presence. Inside the bazaar there are a number of different sights that are of interest to tourists, while locals visit primarily to shop for their daily needs, dine at the myriad restaurants and chat with their neighbours on the narrow, pedestrianized cobblestone streets. It's easy to spend an afternoon- or an entire day- exploring this part of town -Visit The Stone Bridge (Kameni Most) connects the old Turkish/Muslim part in the north of Skopje via Makedonija Square with the new center of Skopje, south of the river Vardar. Some say there has been a bridge since the 6th century, however, the present Stone Bridge dates back to the 15th century, built under the orders of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II the Conquerer. Kameni Most was originally built with stone pillar railings, used by the Turkish rulers of Skopje to spike the heads of those disloyal to Turkish rule. Karpos was the leader of the peasants' uprising in 1689 which took place in the region of Kriva Palanka and Kumanovo, where he fought against the Turks. Although successful at first, the uprising was smothered. Karpos was enslaved, gruesomely impaled on the bridge and afterwards thrown from the bridge into the River Vardar. A memorial stone for Karpos, 'King of Kumanovo', can be found in the middle of the bridge. For some time, a stone suitcase could be seen in the water next to the Stone Bridge, as a piece of art. At the moment (2011), the suitcase has been replaced by a statue of a girl diving into the river Vardar. Visit Matka gorge. Not only the gorge and lake themselves, with the monastery, but also the journey there and the peaceful village communities (of Moslems and Christians living together) that you'll pass on your way, are worth the visit. You can eat there, or just get something to drink while you watch people on the other side of the gorge coming down the trail from the cross on the mountain. You can hire a boat. Matka is a natural paradise. There's a project especially dealing with vulture-conservation. Visit Millenium Cross tis one of the newest symbols of Skopje and placed on the highest point on Vodno mountain. It was built in 2002. This Cross was built by Macedonian Orthodox Church in order to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity in the World and on Macedonian soil.
