Once you've arranged your car hire at Kalamata Airport, driving into the city is a breeze. Simply head east along GR 82 to connect with the E55 which runs right into town. Alternatively, if you're heading straight to the beaches or other nearby destinations, you can avoid the city by taking the new bypass. Kalamata is a compact town and easy to navigate. However, when driving in the surrounding area, you need to keep an eye open for pedestrians crossing the road to get to the beach. Also, the roads around Kalamata can be confusing so you'll really appreciate your Sat Nav. You also need to take care out in the countryside as you'll encounter many sharp turns, especially in the mountains.

To get the big picture of Kalamata, take a quick drive up to Kalamata Castle. Located on a wooded hill, the castle dates back to the 13th century. While only ruins remain, the site offers spectacular views of the town and the Messinian Bay.
