Which vehicle category to choose?

  • The French Riviera benefits from a good network of roads, so you can choose to drive on major routes or back roads in any of our vehicles
  • If you're planning on longer journeys, you may prefer to book a larger, more comfortable vehicle like an estate or people carrier.
  • If you're visiting lots of towns and cities and value easy car handling and parking, a smaller saloon car might suit you better.

Driver's licence

Driving licences from the EU and Switzerland are accepted at all our branches. Bring your identity card or valid passport too. Licences from other countries must be in the Latin alphabet and your stay needs to be short-term. You're welcome to add another driver, provided their licence is valid and available when collecting your car.

Age Restrictions

You must be 21 or older to hire a car with Sixt on the French Riviera. Also, you must have been in possession of your licence for a minimum of 12 months.

Accidents

Tips for the Region

The French Riviera is a place of glitz and glamour, with upscale seaside locations like Cannes, Nice, and Monte Carlo as highlights. There are also ancient medieval towns and villages further inland, like Grasse and St. Paul de Vence.

The Beaches

The beaches of the French Riviera stretch from Marseille in the west to Menton in the east. You'll find everything from pebbly beaches to fine white sandy stretches, including urban and secluded spots. There are also some interesting rocky coves to explore and lovely coastal walks. One of the nicest beaches is La Pointe de l'Aiguille in Théoule sur Mer, which is sandy and not too busy. Mala beach at Cap d'Ail is another gorgeous sandy beach and fairly quiet, but please note, there are lots of steps to access it. Plage Passable at St. Jean, Cap Ferrat is gravelly but pleasant and is partly sheltered by a stone wall on one side.

Ancient Hilltop Villages

The ancient hilltop villages of the French Riviera are lovely attractions overlooking the mountains and the sea. They blend medieval architecture with superb views and most feature 12th and 13th-century buildings along with medieval walls and twisty, cobbled streets. Churches and bell towers are common landmarks and you'll find intriguing boutiques and galleries where local artists sell their work. Prime examples of hilltop villages include Eze, Biot, Gourdon, Mougins, and St. Paul de Vence./p>

Important Cities

There are many important cities to visit in this lovely area and you'll really be spoilt for choice. Start by exploring Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo, all very different and exceptional in their own way.

Cannes

As an affluent and glamorous place, Cannes never fails to impress with its splendid beaches and luxury yachts moored in the harbour. The harbour along with the bay and the town centre with its old quarter all justify at least a day trip. There's also a cluster of islands to visit off the Cannes coast and these are just a few minutes away by boat.

Nice

Nice enjoys a superb seaside location and is often unofficially called the capital of the Côte d'Azur. Its pebbly beach is ideal for sun seekers, while in the city itself, interesting markets, an enticing old town, splendid architecture, and many chic restaurants provide entertainment for all.

Monte Carlo

Monte-Carlo is part of Monaco and lies to the east of the French Riviera. It's well known as a place for the rich and famous. The Place du Casino has great views and the nearby harbour area has many nice restaurants. Along the elegant boulevards are many fashionable places to shop and a visit to the Avenue de la Costa is shopping heaven.

Climate, Cuisine, and Children

Climate and temperatures

The French Riviera climate is mild all year round, although winters can be wet and summers sunny and hot. Atlantic frontal systems pass through the area, particularly during the autumn, winter, and spring. Very occasionally, winters are cold and snowy but summers often enjoy highs of around 35 °C. The western region can be cooler than the east and a wind called the Mistral often blows from the Rhone Valley, keeping the weather cooler but still pleasant.

The French Riviera Cuisine

France is world-famous for its cuisine and the French Riviera is no exception. Specialties include bouillabaisse, pumpkin gratin, fried chickpea cakes called panisse, ratatouille and salad nicoise, sauteed veal with olives, and almond candies (from Aix en Provence). These are all available in the region's cafes and restaurants along with fine wines and other regional dishes.

The French Riviera with children

There are some wonderful places to go with children in the French Riviera, with swimming and snorkeling opportunities on many beaches. Take a bike ride through the countryside, visit Roman ruins, hike along the Calanques, or visiting the Parc National du Mercantour to see the wildlife. Nice's promenade des Anglais offers boat trips and dolphin watching, while Digne has the Musée Promenade with exciting dinosaur fossils.
