Driving in Sweden

Rules & Regulations

Here are some rules and driving tips that you should know before you start your road trip in Sweden.

  • When driving in Sweden remember that you have to drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times by front and rear-seat passengers when travelling in a car.
  • You must be aged 18 or older and hold a valid driver’s license. A UK driving license is accepted in Sweden even after Brexit.
  • The legal alcohol limit in Sweden is stringent, and the limit is 0.02% of alcohol in your blood.
  • Your headlights must always be switched on and set to dipped beam even in the daytime.
  • Tyres requirements during summer and the winter season are as follows. Tread depth during summer conditions is 1.6 mm. Tread depth during winter is 3 mm.
  • When driving a car, during the period 1 December to 31 March, you should have winter tyres on your vehicle if there are winter conditions. If you pull a trailer, the trailer should also have winter tyres.
  • Winter tyres may be studded or non-studded during winter months.
  • Studded tyres are prohibited between 16th April – 30th September unless winter conditions are prevailing.

Please make sure that you are aware of all the road regulations before you start your trip to Sweden.

Speed Limits

The speed limits when driving in Sweden are as follows:

Speed limits range from 110 km/h (65mph) on main highways, 70 km/h (43mph) on smaller roads, and 50 km/h (31mph) in towns and cities.

Things to Bring Along

When driving in Sweden here are the items that are recommended:

  • Warning triangle
  • First aid kit
  • Tow rope
  • Jump leads
  • Reflective jacket
  • Fire extinguisher

Beware of the game – moose, deer, etc. as this constitutes a very real danger on many roads (a yellow warning triangle with a red border depicts the animal most common on a particular stretch of road).
