One the best features of being a global business is that no matter where you go in the world, you’ll always have a friend. With Sixt, we’ve been able to work with some incredibly talented photographers around the globe, people who’ve now become friends and who also share Sixt’s view that a journey should be an experience. A journey like this should always be truly unique.
Recently, one of our favourite go-to Brits, Tom Carter, or NomadLad as you may know him from Instagram, headed to Slovenia. Travelling with Sixt-steadfast Jack Harding and Guilia Woergartner, they set out to get a new look at one of the Europe’s hidden gems. We caught up with Tom after his trip so he could divulge some of his knowledge and hopefully help you get the most out of your trip to Slovenia.
Getting Around
Flying from Edinburgh, the team collected their car from our on-site airport branch. It offered a wide range of vehicles from compact cars to luxury saloons and SUVs. The team stayed on the edge of the Triglav National Park which, according to Tom, is “one of the best areas to explore in Slovenia”.
If you’re looking to book, acquiring accommodation is done with ease. The group’s recommendation is to keep yourself glued to hotel booking sites as they are regularly refreshed with a selection of last-minute deals. In their case, they were able to get a stay at the stunning Vila Triglav, located right on the shore of a lake, ideal for that clean morning air!
The area itself makes for a great affordable family trip too, according to Tom: “We found it surprisingly cheap! The local food was affordable and delicious, and the fuel was also relatively inexpensive. I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a cost-effective trip”
What To Look Out For
We asked Tom where some of his key locations were: “The main spots for us to visit mostly centred around the Triglav National Park. This park was home to numerous high-altitude views, insane mountain passes and reflective lakes, the most famous location on the trip was the stunningly beautiful Lake Bled.
We always take our full range of camera equipment as you never know what situation you’ll end up shooting. We also took our drones to get some great shots of our car driving through the countryside.” He encourages mapping out the region too, as you’ll likely lose yourself in your location once you set off.
Dining in
Views weren’t the only thing on the menu; the country’s cuisine was also an affordable delight: “The food was great and very affordable – We had a set lunch menu for around €20 and the dishes were fantastic. The local trout was very tasty and also, the Slovenians are quite fond of desserts – the apple strudel is a staple winner!”
Being Sixt, we wanted to make sure that we had an appropriate car for the journey. For this trip, we went with the BMW 7 Series, a real piece of luxurious work! If you’re looking to do a similar trip, Tom recommends something comfortable, you’ll likely be driving a lot through the vast terrain! However, if it’s a couple’s road trip you’re after, then something like a 2 Series convertible or equivalent would be ideal.
If you’re thinking of heading to Slovenia, head to Sixt.co.uk first, you’ll need a car and we’ve got a great selection!
