The 5 Best Beaches Near Edinburgh

Just because the days are shorter doesn’t mean these incredible beaches aren’t worth seeing for a brisk walk. The rugged and breath-taking coasts near Edinburgh make for exhilarating hikes and day trips. Pack up the 4×4 and see the Scottish countryside including these fantastic spots. You’ll usually find not just natural beauty but amazing villages or towns nearby.

North Berwick

This beach can’t come recommended enough because of its adjacent town of North Berwick. Visitors and residents alike love this small spot stuck in time and full of wonder. It’s dotted with cafes and restaurants and has an authentic Scottish charm. The beach itself has green hills in the distance, rock pools, and a delightful harbour.

Aberladay

If you love bird watching then head to the village of Aberladay. It too is authentically Scottish and downright delightful. It also has small artisan shops and cafes for nice Autumn afternoons. Head across the wooden boardwalk for over a half-hour and you’ll find yourself through a nature reserve and at a remote sandy beach. There are a lot of different plant and bird species here to admire.

Portobello

This may be a resident and student favourite due to its close proximity to the city centre. Portobello is a quintessential seaside town with its Victorian-era buildings and matching promenade. Come for a brisk walk and see the local shops, bars, and cafes and enjoy a delicious meal. Even in Autumn, you can take in the sights and atmosphere of this local seaside town.

Cramond

With your hire car ready you can take a quick drive north to find Cramond. It was developed over many years from a quaint fishing village. Today it is filled with sweet little white-washed houses and a harbour filled with multi-coloured boats. It’s a lovely place to spend a few hours either walking down the promenade or admiring it with a coffee or a beer. If you’re brave you might even be able to charter a quick boat trip over to Cramond Island!

Gullane

If you love a bit of the seaside added to your golf game than Gullane is for you. This popular part of the world has a huge woodland as well as an incredibly sandy beach, all with a world-class golf course. It’s a popular place for its sheer beauty and you’ll find plenty of people taking in a brisk walk even during the colder month. The town itself is great with so many little cafes and pubs to enjoy a truly magical and secluded place.

Yellowcraigs

Yellowcraigs is an award-winning beach and popular all year round. In winter you can expect gangs of families and friends sledding down the now snow-covered sandhills. The whole area has a maritime charm and beauty to it with rock pools, endless sands, and even an old lighthouse. Nearby is the island of Fidra, which is said to be Robert Louis Stevenson’s inspiration for Treasure Island. Even the nearby village of Dirleton is a treat with a medieval castle and gardens.

Whatever your beach needs SIXT has you covered with a selection of large vehicles from minivans to 4x4s. The Scottish beaches, joined by their charming seaside town counterparts, can make for a great winter break. The sublime and beauty of the area hold up all year round and there’s nothing like enjoying cozy afternoons seaside adjacent in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. For something truly special make sure to enjoy the town of Edinburgh itself, which is steeped in culture and history.
