If you have concluded a rental agreement for a van or truck with Sixt, then you should become familiar with some of the regulations contained in the Highway Code that may be relevant to you.

In the UK the most important legal requirements are contained within the Highway Code. This Highway Code applies to England, Scotland and Wales.

The following overview will provide you with the do‘s and don’ts which you will need to be aware of when driving a van or truck.

Driving and Resting Times

The mandatory driving and resting times apply to all vehicles over 3.5t permissible maximum weight and are subject to EU-wide regulations.

Please note that the regulations contained in the Driving Personnel Regulations, as amended, form the foundation for the legal basis.

Traffic Bans

Currently, there are no general traffic ban in the UK.


  • In Greater London there is a ban on night journeys between the hours of 9pm and 7am for heavy goods over 18t
  • In addition to this ban on night journeys,  there is also a ban on weekends between Saturday 1pm and Monday 7am
  • Vans and truck with more than 3.5t total weight without Euro-IV-emission Levels have to pay an extra Charge (200 British pound Sterling; Jan 2016)
