Herrenchiemsee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just 60 km away from Munich is one of Bavaria’s most beautiful palace grounds situated dreamily on an island in the middle of its biggest lake. Visitors can take tours to see the State Staircase, King Ludwig’s Apartment and the Hall of Mirrors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fun way to see more of the grounds is by horse-drawn carriage, available for small groups – all for a cheap price of a few euros. The inside of the palace is filled with priceless artefacts and stately design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neuschwanstein Castle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It might take a couple of hours but it’s worth the drive from Munich to see this iconic castle. With its tall spires, quirky colour design and sheer size, it’s probably one of the most famous castles in the world, particularly for its influence on Walt Disney’s design of the Disney Land castle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neuschwanstein was built in the 19th Century by Ludwig II in honour of Richard Wagner. It is situated on top of a high hill above the village of Hohenschwangau, with panoramic views of the river and even the Alps in the distance. The palace itself is exceptional with daily tours of the exquisite rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salzburg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you’re in Munich you can actually make a day trip to Salzburg, the journey is about 145 km, taking you just over the Austrian border. The city is famous for its picturesque medieval buildings, the views of the Salzach River and Eastern Alps, as well as being the birthplace of Mozart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, besides visiting Mozart’s birthplace, you can also see the Mirabell Palace, swim in the Salzach river if it’s hot enough, have a drink in the Stiegl Brewery, or even hike the Untersberg if you’re brave enough!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rothenburg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It may be worth spending a night here as the journey is just under 3 hours, but the historic town of Rothenburg is another picturesque location well worth the trip. The town is popular for its beautiful medieval architecture and colourful design, a famous stop along the Romantic Road of Southern Germany. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you visit you’ll marvel at the fairytale design of the town, particularly Pl\u00f6nlein – a small intersection filled with half-timber buildings and views of two towers that date back to the 13th Century. Be sure to also walk along the old town walls and to take pictures of the Old Town and the Town Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuremberg <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In just over 2 hours you can be in Nuremberg, one of Germany’s most beautiful and culturally significant cities. Although much was destroyed in World War II, the fact that so many great artists and thinkers over many centuries came or resided in Nuremberg, the castles, churches and buildings have been restored exceptionally well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you visit be sure to check out the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, as well as visiting the Historic City Walls. The Roman Catholic Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) is an incredible piece of gothic architecture dating back to 1352. One of the most famous German Renaissance artists was a resident of Nuremberg, Albrecht D\u00fcrer, and visitors can still visit his house today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
