This ancient town is perched in two hills divided by the scenic River Bode in\u00a0Saxony<\/strong>.\u00a0Its\u00a0fascinating history includes being the birthplace of the German nation, being ruled by women for 800 years and having the first female doctor in 1754. 2. F\u00dcSSEN<\/b>, BAVARIA<\/b><\/h2>\n

F\u00fcssen\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0fine historical town on Germany\u2019s Romantic Road. Many people use the town as a base to visit the nearby 19th\u00a0Century fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein and the equally impressive\u00a0Hohenschwangau\u00a0Castle. Situated in\u00a0Bavaria\u2019s beautiful countryside and next to the River Lech, the town is bursting with baroque churches and medieval houses. St.\u00a0Mang\u2019s\u00a0Abbey is well worth a visit for the oldest mural in Germany and its opulent interior. In\u00a0Bavaria\u2019s\u00a0Franconia region lies\u00a0Germany\u2019s best-preserved walled town,\u00a0Rothenburg\u00a0ob\u00a0der Tauber. Once you pass through the towering city gates, the architecture inside is no less impressive. Huge half-timbered grain stores line the streets and you can walk the walls to get great views of the medieval architecture. If you\u2019re\u00a0into traditional Christmas crafts,\u00a0Rothenburg\u2019s\u00a0seasonal\u00a0market is\u00a0known\u00a0for authentic ornaments and the town is even home to the German Christmas Museum. Franconia also has superb wines grown in the nearby vineyards that are well worth checking out.<\/p>\n

4. MITTENWALD<\/b>, BAVARIA<\/b><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re into Alpine scenery,\u00a0Mittenwald\u00a0is a fabulous destination. The town\u2019s pretty,\u00a0colourful houses are set amid the Alps and forested paths lead you out of the town in all directions. The town has two fantastic mountain lakes nearby,\u00a0Lautersee\u00a0and\u00a0Ferchensee, that are great for bathing in the summer months. Many of the houses\u00a0and buildings\u00a0are painted in colourful frescoes, a great example being the\u00a0Geigenbaumuseum\u00a0that also has an amazing collection of violins. We also recommend taking the\u00a0Karwendelbahn, a gondola\u00a0that runs out of\u00a0Mittenwald\u00a0to the top of\u00a0Karwendel\u00a0Mountain, with its staggering panoramas.<\/p>\n

5. MONSCHAU<\/b>, RHINELAND-PALATINATE<\/b><\/h2>\n

Monschau\u00a0is situated in the Eifel region near Belgium. Its half-timbered houses perch directly over the\u00a0Rur\u00a0river\u00a0and the town is a gateway into the Eifel National Park with its cycling paths and wilderness walks. Narrow cobbled streets run through the historic old town and\u00a0Monschau\u00a0Castle dates to 1198. You can walk up to the Haller Ruin to get a great view of the\u00a0Rur\u00a0Valley,\u00a0the castle and\u00a0the\u00a0town centre.\u00a0Monschau\u00a0is also known for its\u00a0al\u00a0fresco dining,\u00a0with restaurants and hotels moving their\u00a0tables outside in the summer months.<\/p>\n
