Driving Licence Changes | All You Need to Know

DVLA photocard driving licence changes

As of 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the UK photocard driving licence is no longer valid or issued by DVLA. This counterpart was initially introduced to display specific driving licence details that could not fit on the photocard, such as vehicle categories you are entitled to drive or any endorsement/penalty points. When you now go to pick up your Sixt car hire, you need to provide us with a unique code issued by DVLA which you can find more about below.

If you have a photocard driving licence, destroy the paper counterpart as it is now invalid. However, if you were issued your driving licence before 1998 and therefore have just a paper licence, keep this safe as it is still valid.

Rent a Sixt car without your Driving Licence Paper Counterpart

Now that the paper counterpart of your driver's licence has been abolished, everything is done digitally. Despite these new changes, Sixt makes it easy for you to hire a car but the process has changed slightly. See the steps below to find out your unique code before picking up your Sixt hire vehicle. To make the process smoother, we will remind you to find this information during the booking and payment process.

How to Find your Driving Licence Code

  • First you need to enter your driving licence number (found in section 5 of your photocard), your National Insurance number (found on your NI card, payslips and P60 documents) and post code onto this DVLA form found here.
  • After this you can view your personal licence information. Select "Share your Licence Information" and then "Create a Code" to receive your unique code. This is only valid for 21 days after generation and we need to see it whilst still valid.
  • Download the PDF by choosing "View, Print or Save your Licence Information". You can then either print it out or present via mobile or tablet and hand it to the Sixt staff during the pick-up process.
  • If you have any issues, do not hesitate to contact our helpful customer service staff at 0844 499 3399 or via email at help-uk@sixt.com. We will be happy to give you more information about the new process.
