Drive in Wakefield with Sixt

Wakefield is a city in the county of West Yorkshire, with a history based in the Industrial Age but that dates back to Roman and medieval times as well as having some evidence of prehistoric human settlements. Its rich industrial heritage can be understood and experienced at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, located at the Caphouse Colliery coal mine in Overton just outside of the city. The Museum, which is one of the most significant of its kind in the UK, offers guided underground tours of the mine, a visitors centre with exhibitions on the social and industrial history of the mines, and a library and archive centre. Hiring a car provides convenient transport to attractions such as this outside of the city, and also the opportunity to enjoy the scenic country side. Pugney's Country Park is a large public space with 2 lakes, offering a pleasant setting for family walks and afternoon picnics. Also on the outskirts of Wakefield is the ruined medieval Sandal Castle, which sits atop a hill and offers great views of the city and the River Calder that runs through it. The Castle has played an interesting part in English history, passing through the hands of a number of aristocratic families, and it also features as the setting for the opening scene of Shakespeare's Henry VI play - which is sometimes performed on the catle ruins. If you are looking for a more modern activity, the nearby Delta Force Paintball centre and F1 Indoor Carting centre both offer a thrilling afternoon.
