Sightseeing Destinations

The HMS Victory is one of Portsmouth's most fascinating sightseeing destinations and only a short drive away in your rental vehicle. Contained within the world's oldest commissioned warship is a museum exploring the role of the ship in the famous Battle of Trafalgar, the battle which saw the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte's plans to invade Britain. The Victory currently holds dual roles as the Flagship of the First Sea Lord and acting as a form of living museum to the Georgian Navy.

You can enjoy a visit to the house museum of Charles Dickens, one of the most celebrated English authors, during your time in Portsmouth. Unassuming from the outside, the museum is a small terraced house where, in 1812, Dickens was born. The home in which he lived for a short while has been faithfully restored and furnished in homage to the middle-class style of Dickens' era. Exhibits include furniture, ceramics and household objects which have been lovingly recreated in the image of the family's real possessions. Another fascinating- if slightly macabre- exhibit is the couch on which Dickens died at his home in Kent, as well as his snuffbox, inkwell and paper knife. Time your visit to coincide with the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month to enjoy seeing volunteers in Regency-period costume.
