Situated in the county of Dorset in southern England, Gillingham is a small town and civil parish. It features a local museum which has interesting exhibits on its local history from Roman times to the influence the town had on the painter John Constable to its railway heritage. A good time to visit is at the time of the annual agricultural Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show in August or during the annual Gillingham Town Carnival in October where the local area comes alive and processions can be enjoyed down the roads. The nearby National Trust gardens at Stourhead make for a lovely day out, complete with the best of British afternoon tea! Hiring a car to explore the local area is a good idea for convenient and flexible travel, especially as rural public transport can be irregular. Gillingham has good transport links, only 4 miles from the A303 which connects London to South West England and half an hour drive from the fascinating city of Salisbury.
