Sixt Tip

The industrial heritage of Blackburn would not have been so strong without its canals. Nearly 130 miles long, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal cuts through the centre of the town. The first barges arrived in Blackburn in 1810 bringing yarn, oil, timber and coal and taking away processed cotton cloth. As transportation became cheaper then production increased and giant mills were built along the canal banks giving ease of access to the water and coal they needed. At the height of production, there were 39 mills in Blackburn while the canal itself provided day trips for the mill workers. Today this history is celebrated in the annual Blackburn Canal Festival held at Eanam Wharf.
