Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique and is located in the Sofala Province of the country. It was established in 1890 by the Portuguese and thus offers a mixture of African and European culture. Tourism is becoming a more important industry for the city and there is a number of interesting attractions. The Beira railway station is a fascinating piece of history as is Beira Cathedral, which was built in the 1960s to meet the religious needs of the population. Further afield and reachable by car, visitors are encouraged to take in the wonderful scenery at Gorongosa National Park. 4,000 square km in size, it is home to a staggering array of animals and plants.
