Best cities to visit in Lake Garda

  • Verona: Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero are the most illustrious landmarks here, a castle and bridge in the 14th century. The castle houses the Civico Museo d'Arte with artworks by Rubens and Bellini, among others. Or see one of the best-preserved and largest Roman amphitheatres, Arena di Verona. For a real taste of Verona’s street life, head to Centro Storico and its Piazza Delle Erbe.
  • Brescia: Often overlooked as a tourist town, Brescia has some fascinating attractions, like Tempio Capitolino, a Roman temple built in 73 CE. There are also the ruins of a 3rd-century open-air theatre, the Teatro Romano. Just above the town’s historic centre is Brescia’s still intact castle, Castello and the Piazza Della Loggia is a wonderful place to eat out al fresco.
  • Rovereto: The smallest of the three towns, here you can visit Rovereto Castle and its War History Museum. There’s also the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art or MART as it’s more commonly known. There’s also the Futuristic House of Art Fortunato Depero. For dramatic views over the mountainous Trentino area, drive to Forte Pozzacchio.

Winter 2021 in Lake Garda

The climate in this region is temperate all year long, so there’s plenty of sightseeing in winter. At the northern end of the lake is Riva del Garda, offering a combination of modern tourist resort attractions and medieval buildings with narrow streets. Take advantage of your hire car to drive north of Riva to Cascata del Varone, a dramatic glacial gorge. You can also visit the eccentric Art Deco villa of Vittoriale d’Italia.
