London Gatwick Airport is located in Crawley, West Sussex. The origins of Gatwick date back to the late 1920's, when land opposite to the racecourse at Hunts Green farm was used as an aerodrome.Following a change in ownership the aerodrome was licensed to be used as an airfield in August 1930. Surrey Aero Club was subsequently formed using the old hunts Green farmhouse as a clubhouse. In1932 the aerodrome was bought by the Redwing Aircraft Company who used it as a flying school. The following year, in 1933, the Air Ministry approved the aerodrome to allow commercial flights fromGatwick. During the same year the aerodrome was sold for £13,500 to Morris Jackaman, an investor who formed a company named Airports Limited in 1934. Hillman's Airways became Gatwick's firstcommercial airline operating scheduled services from the airport to Belfast and Paris. Today, Gatwick is an important airport in Britain's transport network with 66 airlines flying from Gatwick thundreds of destinations across the Globe. The busiest route in 2009 being the flight to Malaga with 1,116,403 people being carried in the year. The airport's passenger numbers peaked in 2007 wheairport handled over 35 million passengers, highlighting how crucial and busy the airport is. BAA the former owners recently sold the airport to Global Infrastructure Partners, the new ownersannounced their plans for a £1 billion-investment programme to expand and upgrade the airport's existing infrastructure. Gatwick Airport has two terminals, North and South with both offering shops and restaurants. Disabled passengers can travel through all areas. There are facilities for baby changing and feeding, andplay areas and video games for children. For business travellers their are lounges offering internet access.
