Bristol
Bristol is located in the south-west of England, 105 miles west of London and 25 miles east of Cardiff in Wales. The city and its surrounding urban area has a population of just over 1 million ranking it as the eight largest city in the UK.
The city has developed around the River Avon and has a short coastline on the Severn Estuary, which flows into the Bristol Channel. Trade in Bristol originally centred around the port but in more recent years media, electronics and aerospace industries have been the more prominent.
Today Bristol is rich in culture with a popular art scene and a number of theatres and production companies including the Bristol Old Vic a subsidiary of the Old Vic theatre company based in London. The city also has the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery which houses various displays including a collection of natural history, archaeology, local glassware and Chinese ceramics.
Bristol has two universities the University of Bristol and University of the West of England, the former of which has over 22,000 students and a string of famous graduates including Derren Brown, Simon Pegg, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. The University of the West of England was formerly known as Bristol Polytechnic, and has almost 30,000 students.
There are a number of successful local sports clubs including two football league clubs; Bristol Rovers and Bristol City, Bristol Rugby club who play in the RFU Championship and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.
Bristol has first class transport links with two railway stations - Bristol Temple Meads is located in the centre and has high speed trains to London Paddington, whilst Bristol Parkway is located in the north of the city and offers high speed connections to London and Cardiff.
Bristol Airport services international and domestic flights for the Bristol and Somerset area. Over 5.5 million passengers use the airport every year taking flights with airlines such as Air France, easyJet and Ryanair.
