The motive of the protesters is because of the recent plans for building a big hotel complex in front of the Yacht Club, which would mean modification of the urbanisation laws in ruling at present.

  Easter in Mallorca - Parades for "Semana Santa" During Easter thousands of people take to the streets, dressed up with masks on, cone hats and iron chains attached to their bodies. Some of them are carrying huge wooden crucifixes, and others with religious man-size dummies. In Mallorca there are more than 50 groups of religious paraders, 30 of them in Palma itself. The love for this parade, and each group is considered an honor and usually passed down the generations from father to son.

  The day of the Balearic Islands, which is the official holiday of the Balearic autonomous community, is celebrated annually on March the 1st. Participatory activities include aquatic sports such as kayaking or canoeing; concerts by local artists or shows organized by the radio channels. The event also includes products grown by the farmers, a sailors show, medieval and Roman markets, organic stands, taverns and typical style houses on show.

  The new five star hotel Jumeirah in Port de Soller is just about to open its´ doors. The director of the hotel Fernando Gibaja announced that the inauguration will be on the 12th March. The 120 rooms are placed in a generous garden of 18.000 square metres. 50 employees will take care of the mainly German and English customers.

Tradicionally every participant of this event eats 12 grapes at midnight which promises good fortune for the coming year acordingto Spanish tradition.

  From this week until the 8th of January lots of little Christmas markets have been set up for the festivity period in central Palma. The markets consist in small stalls where you can purchase allkinds of Christmas decorations, home-made Mallorquin products and presents for loved ones. Also to be found in these little markets are little stalls where you can stop off and rest from shopping, orhave a break with a warm little glass of mold vine and a Christmas snack.

  From the 11th of November until the 27th of January a 450 metre squared ice rink has been installed in the 'Parc de ses Estacions' infront of Plaza España, where adults and kids can spend time havinga lot of fun. It costs 5 euro per person, and that includes the rental of the ice skates plus 25 minutes on the rink. It's open every day from 10h till 22h.

  Next thursday 10th of November is the celebration of the yearly fair in Inca, better known as Good Thursday. It's one of the most important festivals on the island. It all starts the night before, the whole city goes out and temporary bars are placed all down the streets. The next day there is a funfair and a couple of traditional markets. Normally on this day the Inca train gives you free return tickets.

  Panades i Roviols: Majorcan Easter Specialties
  
  During the Semana Santa two sorts of traditional pastries are prepared. Therefore the whole family meets ups and cooks for a whole day or evenseveral days.
  The panades are a salty pastry made of lard, water and flour. The filling consists of pork meat or peas or both, enriched with a little bit of sobrasada.
  The roviols arecomposed of the same dough but have a sweet filling of apricot, peach, pumpkin jam or brossat (majorcan cream cheese).
  The preparation should be done %u201Cpoc a poc%u201D, that means slowly, withcalmness and love.

  bars make a lot of noise when they go outside to smoke. Above all there are many complaints every Tuesday with the %u201CRuta Martiana%u201D - a popular tapas route within the old town bars.Many lo
  willfull bar owners now closed at 1am instead of at 2am, and the government has opened a legal process to ban the bars from opening after midnight.
  Only a noise pollution test will berequired
  when the bars have to close later on weekdays.

  January the 20th is the day of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of Palma de Mallorca and to celebrate, the Balearic capital put their best clothes on, and there are all kinds of activities for bothresidents and visitors for celebrating this important day. This celebration is right at the end of the holidays and includes concerts, fun runs by foot or by bike, an opportunity to sample traditionalfood, big bonfires to barbecue your food on. People bring meat, spicy sausage (typical of Mallorca), bread, and their own drinks, then walk around Palma, which has been lit up specially for theoccasion. During the evening, groups of all ages take to the streets to watch the performances of their favourite bands spread out all over the different squares in the centre of Palma. On the 20th, alot of people eat popular Mallorquin food, and climb the castle of Bellver. There is also a cycling route which is famous on this day, it's fun for the whole family, and a great opportunity to livePalma to its best.
