    The Cathedral "Le Seu" is a landmark of Palma de Mallorca and one of the most beautiful of Spain. The construction took 358 years and was finally completed in the year 1904.     Sa Seu cathedral which is the landmark of Palma. It is located at the port of Palma, and was built largely of sandstone. In 1601 it was finally completed. Earlier this century it was converted againby the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. The most lavishly decorated portal of the cathedral is the Porta del Mirador, one over 15 meters high arches. In the tympanum of the portal is a Last Supper. Thejambs are provided with figures of five patriarchs and prophets of five.

    Many visitors in Majorca ask themselfes if the tap water is drinkable. To answer this question you need to be aware that the quality of tap water is very different depending on the region you are. Inthe area around Santanyi, Sineu, Sa Pobla the water is harmful because of high nitrate analyse values. In contrast the values of Palma are ok. The city gets its water from the fount "Font de la Vila".In generell you should avoid to drink tap water. In supermarkets exists a hugh choice of different bottled waters which should be better used.

    Last month, in April, the unemployment rate on the island slightly decreased, not only because the tourism season has started but, also compared to last years numbers of unemployed people. The ministry of labour confirmed that the unemployment rate declined by 6.535 people. This is a drop of 7.2% compared to March 2012. The year to year comparison shows a drop in April, the number of unemployed goes down by 6.4%. In April 84,041 jobless people were registered on the Balearic islands.

    On the 9th May, there will be a 24-hour kart racing in Can Picafort. Twenty teams, each consisting of five members, will compete and will determine the fastest driver of all. Afterwards, on the 10th and 11th May the the most competent drivers will compete. On the 11th of May at 6:00pm the award ceremony will be celebrated, following there will be a buffet and live music. The benefits of the event will be donated to Peter Maffay's children's foundation the "Tabaluga Kinderstiftung". The kart race course can be found after the last roundabout in direction Artá.

    On the island of Mallorca, the car parking prices will go up during the summer months. It will be particularly noticeable in the areas of Calvia. At present, the price for parking on the sea front in Magaluf, Palmanova, and Santa Ponsa reach 1.73 EUR for the maximum stay of two hours. Between 13:30h and 16.30h, as well as saturday afternoon and sunday, parking in Calvia is free.In Marratxi it´s different, there the first 30 minutes in the blue zones are free. This is with the only condition of leaving a visible note stating the time of arrival correctly noted down. Generally, to park in the blue zone, a parking ticket is required, on the other hand it is totally prohibited to park on yellow lines.

    Due to the high demand of bookings on the island, many hotels have closed their booking systems for the month of may, for the time being , to avoid overbookings. This situation happened for the last time during the tourist boom in the 80´s. Mainly the new boom is caused by the German, British and Scandinavian tourists. According to the newspaper Ùltima Hora, the most demanded destinations are Playa de Palma and Palmanova-Magalluf. A 10% increase is expected compared with last year. It is expected to be similar for rest of the summer.

    The natural parc S´albufera is only open until 16.00h. As a result according to the government, the salaries and the staff will be saved.But last summer there were hundreds of people in the parc without suppervision. Experts in environment advised the integrity of the reserve is threatened, due the cut backs in security. The threat allso includes illegal fishing in the park which threatens the fish population of the park. As from now onwards, the environmentalists will take strict measures against those visiters who don´t respect the visiting hours.

    Snow caos in the mountains of Tramuntana Due to the radical winter climate we have had this week in Mallorca, seven tourist buses were trapped in Sa Calobra. The tourists mainly Spanish and German were trapped for several hours on the buses until the snowplough could clear the way.

  • 11.03.2013- New speed limit of 130 km/h planned

    The central government in Madrid plans new regulations for the maximum speed limit in Spain. At the moment the speed limit on the motorways in Majorca is 120 km/h, this will now be increased to 130 km/h. It is not yet decided to which of the 4 motorways the speed limit will be applied. Following the announcement of the Spanish traffic authority (tráfico) of serious accidents on the roads, on secondary roads where until now the speed limit had been 100 km/h will now be reduced to 90 km/h.

    Easter in Mallorca - Parades for "Semana Santa" During Easter thousands of people take to the streets, dressed up with masks on, cone hats and iron chains attached to their bodies. Some of them are carrying huge wooden crucifixes, and others with religious man-size dummies. In Mallorca there are more than 50 groups of religious paraders, 30 of them in Palma itself. The love for this parade, and each group is considered an honor and usually passed down the generations from father to son.

    Panades i Roviols: Majorcan Easter Specialties

    During the Semana Santa two sorts of traditional pastries are prepared. Therefore the whole family meets ups and cooks for a whole day or evenseveral days.
    The panades are a salty pastry made of lard, water and flour. The filling consists of pork meat or peas or both, enriched with a little bit of sobrasada.
    The roviols are composed of the same dough but have a sweet filling of apricot, peach, pumpkin jam or brossat (majorcan cream cheese).
    The preparation should be done %u201Cpoc a poc%u201D, that means slowly, withcalmness and love.

    Palma's old town bars to close early

    According to locals, due to the new anti-tobacco law having been inforced, noise pollution has increased considerably. This is because many users ofthe
    bars make a lot of noise when they go outside to smoke. Above all there are many complaints every Tuesday with the %u201CRuta Martiana%u201D - a popular tapas route within the old town bars. Many lo
    willfull bar owners now closed at 1am instead of at 2am, and the government has opened a legal process to ban the bars from opening after midnight.
    Only a noise pollution test will be required
    when the bars have to close later on weekdays.

    January the 20th is the day of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of Palma de Mallorca and to celebrate, the Balearic capital put their best clothes on, and there are all kinds of activities for bothresidents and visitors for celebrating this important day. This celebration is right at the end of the holidays and includes concerts, fun runs by foot or by bike, an opportunity to sample traditionalfood, big bonfires to barbecue your food on. People bring meat, spicy sausage (typical of Mallorca), bread, and their own drinks, then walk around Palma, which has been lit up specially for the occasion. During the evening, groups of all ages take to the streets to watch the performances of their favourite bands spread out all over the different squares in the centre of Palma. On the 20th, alot of people eat popular Mallorquin food, and climb the castle of Bellver. There is also a cycling route which is famous on this day, it's fun for the whole family, and a great opportunity to live Palma to its best.
