Alicante
Alicante is a historical port on the Costa Blanca Mediterranean coast of Spin. Originally used as a trade centre for Spanish exports of rice, wine, olive oil, oranges and wool Alicante is now a busy tourism driven city. During the 1960's, after some troubled years under the dictatorship of Franco, Alicante began to boom as tourists arrived from Britain and across Europe.
Today Alicante is home to one of the regions largest airports - Alicante Airport and a port that attracts over 80,000 cruise passengers every year. The city has a wide variety of shops and restaurants making it a great place to spend a bit of time before you fly out from Alicante Airport.
Alicante Airport - ALC
Alicante Airport is the gateway to the Costa Blanca coast and serves thousands of holidaymakers each year that are heading to resorts such as Benidorm, Javea, Benifallim, Algorfa and Torrevieja.
Located in the municipality of Elche Alicante Airport lies 10km from the centre of Alicante. Passengers landing at the airport are often advised to pick-up car hire at Alicante Airport as most of the holiday resorts are over 15km from the Airport.
Alicante Airport handles over 10 million passengers each year with the largest share of passengers flying with easyJet, followed Ryanair and Air Birlin. There are two terminals at Alicante Airport, the second of which will open in 2010 and will enable the capacity of the airport to exceed 12 million passengers per year. The terminals contain a range of duty free shops including a Warner Bros gift shop, a great place to spend your last few Euros!

27/01/2010 - Uncover Alicante with Sixt
Alicante, with more than three-hundred days of sunshine a year, an average temperature of 18 degrees and excellent transport connections, is one of the most accessible Mediterranean tourist destinations throughout the whole year. The city is located just 10 minutes from Alicante El Altet Airport, where you can find our Sixt office, with a wide variety of rental cars available at great prices and in all sizes, for small or large families, couples or groups of friends.
Don't let the opportunity escape you to drive a Sixt car and visit the many pleasant places that surround the province of Alicante, for example Castles, Churches, Basilicas, Museums and Parks.....or enjoy a walk through the beautiful surrounding landscape...a walk around the marinas....or the sandy beaches. Without forgetting that all of this is just 25km from the city of Elche, where you can enjoy some of the oldest historical buildings on the Mediterranean, you can find orchids and a palm tree forest, which have been declared World Heritage due to their status as the largest in Europe.
You only have to travel 60km inland from the coast to find the complete opposite of the warm temperatures and the sun and beach, where you will find the city of Alcoy, also known as the city of the bridges. Surrounded by mountains and natural parks. This city is also known for its spectacular fiesta of Moors and Christians which are celebrated every April. These fiestas are officially recognised as international tourist interest as are Spain's oldest parades of the Three Wise Men.
Now you know, if you rent a car with Sixt in Alicante you can enjoy some unforgettable days around the sun and beach and also the snow and mountains!!
