  • 22.04.2012- Gdansk city in pieces

Are you planning your trip to Tricity area and have no idea where to go or what to see?

Well, here is a little tip for you.

Tricity is an area that connects three major cities in north of Poland %u2013 Gda%u0144sk, Sopot and Gdynia. All the places have their own characteristics, like Gdansk is the oldest city so it is the best place for sightseeing. Sopot is mostly know for its clubs and one the longest or probably the longest wooden pier in Europe and you can visit Gdynia when you want to go shopping and spend time with friends or family at the boulevard.

Neptune Fountain - the fountain was initiated by Bartholomew Schachmann mayor and municipal council. It is located in the most representative part of the city %u2013 Dlugi Targ at the entrance to Arthur's Court. The statue of the sea god Neptune was cast in bronze in 1615 by Peter and Johann Rogge Husena in Augsburg by the project Gerdta Benningka. Bowl and stem, on which stands the statue is the work of sculptor Abraham van den Blocke.

Running the fountain was in 1633. A year later, was an iron grille surrounding the swimming pool, designed by Abraham van den Blocke.

Architectural features refer to the fountain Manieristic.

Mannerist in his conception of the figure of the Roman god of the seas and oceans - Neptune is built based on the broken line (a reference to the figures serpentinata), is designed for viewing from all sides. The appearance of the sculpture indicates that the author knew the antique sculptures: Neptune's head resembles the head of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, and the torso is perhaps a reference to the Belvedere Torso. These similarities indicate that the seventeenth-century fountain of Neptune is one of the few examples of the presence of ancient sculpture in the areas of Gdansk.

From 1757-1761 John Charles Stender made a new pool and the core, and the master blacksmith James Barren completed and restored the damaged lattice. Fountain received then the ornate Rococo style.

Damaged during the Second World War, was restored and reopened in 1954.

September 20, 2011 Neptune's statue was removed and taken to the headquarters of Gda%u0144sk PPKZ to carry out conservation work. The planned return to his seat is scheduled for May 2012.
